Elusive Feather Collector

Ok, maybe this isn't really a technical issue, but who packs tools in the tool boxes?
Today after much serious contemplation, I sprung for the 3XL tool box with my scarce and hard earned Farm/Orange coins. I have been trying over a month to get a tool box containing the very rare - maybe extinct? - feather collector needed to build the Parrot Feather workshop. Those Farmer Society clients all want parrot feathers. What's a girl to do when the supply chain breaks down? No one sells the feathers in the market, so I've been trying to build my own workshop.

Numerous tool boxes of smaller sizes were received as a reward from many sources...however, you guessed it, none - not one - contained the feather collector. What am I doing wrong? I unlocked 2 of 4 of the Tool Box rune on the tree (bye-bye scarce stars), won several tool boxes from the wheel, received numerous from quest steps, to no avail.
Would really appreciate some advice. Maybe give a nudge to the tool packer.....Thanks very much.

 

If you want to wait until the next gift-and-trade event, I'll happily gift you a few parrot feather workshops I don't use and any other workshops you can construct. In general, players that have been going a while are very happy to give away any workshops you can make, so posting in the requests thread for any you're missing will most definitely bring results. My farm name is --Shimmer-- if you want to remind me.
Please don't spend your hard-earned coins on toolboxes.

 

There is also a second option though it takes some effort. Crop refinement is a way to get your feather collectors, among other drop items.

Go to your main farm. Click on the farm house. Then click on the flower pot. The window that pops up will have two tabs. Green house and Plant refinery. You need to start with the Greenhouse tab. Then choose your plant. There is a list of all the plants you currently have access to. There are 9 icons for each plant. I do not remember which plant(s) have the feather collector icon. You will have to scroll through the list to find one. Once you find one, you will need to select that plant and then choose plant. This will take you to the next screen. You will need to select between small medium or large plantings. The quantity of seeds you need will be listed next to each one. Select your size and then plant.

It is a random thing if you get a refinement and if you get a refinement it will be a random one of the 9 icons for that plant. Eventually you will get the icon or icons you want.

After you have at least one refinement, you can use the Refine plant tab. There are 4 refinement slots available and more for purchase. You can scroll through the plants and select the refinements you want active. Once you have your feather collector refinement active your chances of getting one as a drop when you grow the crop you received the refinement on greatly increase.

Like I said, this will take some time and effort, but the feather collector refinement today could be the needed comb, zen rake, or Wooden mallet refinement tomorrow.

The Feather Collector is a rare tool, so it does not drop often. You may have more chance of receiving one in the XXL Toolboxes. As advised by fellow players, there are other ways to improve your chances of receiving one, or ask for a Parrot Feather Workshop during the next Gift & Trade.

Thank you for taking the time to explain this. It's totally new to me and I can count on one hand the number of times I've looked in the farm house. Had no idea what it's for. I am the type who benefits very much from detailed explanations. I've saved this for future reference.

 

Thank you! It is very kind and generous of you. If the feather collector continues to elude me by the next G&T, I shall ask. I can't remember how many crates/orders I was unable to fill from this past Season because there were at least 2-3 a day which wanted a parrot feather! The game seems to know which critters I have on my farm. I had the parrots out because they are pretty and things were fine until the game decided I should put them to work!

PS I love your kitty! We had a big fluffy Maine Coon/Persian mix who was part of our family for 17 years. He used to sit and look up at us like your kitty is doing.
