What is the maximum amount of fields I can place?

I am struggling to find a way of laying down 4x4 fields without having loads of 1x1 or 2x1 gaps between. I don't mind having the gaps on the outside as I can fill them up with trees, but it is such an annoyance when there are gaps smack bang in the middle.

 

I always use this guide to help me place my fields. I refer to it weekly as I tend to change my fields around a lot.

 

The FAQ shows the maximum number of 2x2 plots for the mainland, but on baha and in the the rainforest you can actually place 41 2x2 plots. The builder will however, will only place 40, and in the magical glade it places 39 (not the maximum of 40).

 

Although the builder is very useful, putting out fields can be a pain. I usually put out 20, shuffle them around the middle section, then place the remainder. I sometimes think it is just a easy to put them all out by hand.

 

I keep trees (and owl pets) in all the outer edges. Then the builder is forced to place the 2x2s the way I want them.

Put first the 2x1 plots (yellow) and then use the builder. All the 2x2 will be placed in this order. Then just add the 1x1
