Tom Lehrer - didn't he do the Periodic Table song? And with that I pronounce myself a geek!

Indeed he did TC, got me through High School Chemistry class to be able to sing that song. I think the official title of the song is "The Elements Song" if any one is looking for it.

xD ROFL I just loved that story, so hilarious... "Dat a good one"...

I have to say, being a trumpet player myself Louis Armstrong is one of my fav. to listen to, he was such a great trumpet player and as for his singing... well we all know about that but anyway, lol infact it's hilarious, I actually get to play one of Luis' songs "Hello Dolly"... and in our Jazz band we have a singer that actually sings like Louis (not exactly like him because no one can sound just like he did) during the song... great song through and through.

Other songs we play in the Jazz band, "String of Pearls" by Glenn Miller, "Route 66", "Gonna Fly Now" and a ton more. Jazz is EPIC :D

@BeeDance Yeah Beach boys are great I especially like "I get around"....
I definitely don't think that music from the 80's and up is at all oldies....I mean its only like 30 years ago. Day-umm....is it really? Lolz, anyway it's still not that bad. Do you remember "Tom Dooley"? That. Is. Old! :p :p xD
Did you mean Sandi Patty, "Via Dolorosa?" If not then I am confused! :(

    @JioCash
Do you mean to say that our friend Satchmo was the only person who thought he had a good voice?
His playing face tho... xD :) xD

Emphasis on the JAZZ IS EPIC! Gotta shout it man! It truly is... (song of the Volga Boatman, Glenn miller - that's a good example ;) )

Wow, there's some great music listed here! Like most of you, I appreciate many styles of music. I seem to be a minority in that I actually like a lot of the newer country music over the old stuff, but maybe it's precisely because it does sound similar to pop. I never really listened to popular music until my teens in the 80s, so pop and what is now considered "classic" rock :cry:are what I tuned in on. Many a Friday night were spent listening to the dedications on the local rock station:inlove:. I love the Eagles & Journey (Steve Perry Journey, not whoever sings for them now) (yes I know they're 70s). Desperado is still one of my all time favorites. Like Bee said, so many memories are triggered by certain songs, and that one especially hits a cord with me (think senior year, prom, new boyfriend & first kiss with said boyfriend;)). Also love the Beatles, Bob Seager, almost any music that makes my feet move without thinking about it. Not a big fan of a lot of 70s music (♪Fever night, fever night, fever!♫), tho do like some of it; get in debates with DH over whether CCR actually qualifies as music (sorry Bee:oops:)xD. Of course, he can counter by reminding me that I was a huge WHAM! fan xD, and Tears For Fears too:p. Strange as it sounds, I actually like easy listening music, not quite elevator/hold music, but close. Again, one of those memory things; when I was a kid I was anemic, was always getting sick and missing school. I'd be resting on the couch, and my mom used to turn the stereo on to the easy listening station while she cleaned house and took care of me, so that kind of music always brings feelings of love and warmth to me. Not into rap, just not my thing, but I can appreciate that many do like it. I like classical as well, there's just something soothing to it. And Phantom of the Opera was my introduction to Broadway music, Music of the Night is a particular favorite. Didn't know Gerard Butler could sing - gorgeous and multi-talented, oh my!:inlove: My music preferences now mainly fall in the Christian and gospel areas. Absolutely adore Guy Penrod's voice (he used to sing with the Gaither's), he has an absolutely amazing range. I had the privilege of seeing the Gaither's in concert some years back, was a volunteer so was there before the public and they were warming up, and he is just incredible. My favorite Christian bands are Casting Crowns, MercyMe, and Third Day. Third Day has a song, Thief, when I listen, and I mean actually listen and hear not just play the song, it never fails to make me cry. I'll listen to just about anything, as long as it brings positive feelings and emotions (can't stand "music" that makes me tense or angry), or even if it touches something deep inside that makes me cry, as long as there's a message to it and it's not just noise to me. Jazz is good, Motown, R&B, stuff that takes actual talent and makes you want to move I'm all for. And Griff, who could resist Come On Eileen?!;)xD

I guess you're right, most peeps posted like only a select few genres of music. I however like almost any kind of music except for Rock 'n Roll!!! Of course I have a few exceptions (as prev mentioned Elvis...;) ) but for the most part I don't like rock of any kind from any era.

70? Disco Era? (no offense, personal opion:) You would be insane to actually like the 70's music! One word: Scary. (that or the hair styles from the seventies :wuerg: *snigger snigger*

IKR, I was at first surprised to here that he actually sang it, with his own spectacular voice! Listen to "Angel of Music (the mirror one)" right now! :) :) :music:

Oh, trust me! I could resist it! I can resist it very easily! xD

Last thing...here is one of my favorite songs...its worship - and "easy listening". (it is rap, but I promise you will love it!) It is so full of meaning, and very peaceful too.

Hey y'all, I'm a music magpie, favourites (today!) being Micachu 'Eat you heart', Concert Band version of Sibelius 'Finlandia', and The Cure 'Like Cockatoos'. And Palestrina 'Missa Papae Marcelli' if you fancy something churchy. Anything goes in our house, from the pretty to the bad noise...

We are all music and song lovers in our family except my father. Since there are 100s of languages in our country, we have the opportunity to listen to songs and dances of various language. I listen to Tamil, English, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam etc. I love all songs from very old to new. They should be good and should have some meaning and words should be understandable. I listen to such songs.

I like almost all old songs from the golden era of Tamil Film Industry and mid songs. New songs I am very choosy. They should have some meaning.

    I like
    1. Deanna Durbin - the first song from the film "Spring Parade", Its foolish but its fun and also the waltz song; I love to whistle
    2. Karen Carpenters song especially, Top of the world, Sing a song, Jambalya.
    3. Beethoven's song about St.Patricks day. His music is excellent. I have only read about his music in schools. But after listening to this I became his fan.
    4. Pete Seger - Lonesome Valley
    5. Burl Ives - Mocking Bird Hill, Donut song
and lot more. I have all of them in my computer and listen to them everyday, even while doing work. They will be playing very softly.

I would be happy if anyone can suggest good songs from their language. :)

So true friend! I don't think that most of todays teens realize that if they call the 80's an old time - what are they calling their own parents? xD xD xD ROFL

Teen: "Hi Mom, I just heard an 80's hit song on the radio...and BOY IT WAS SO OLD!"

Mom: " *hesitant stammer* Uh...., if you say so sweetie" xD

Well, I have to be the oddball. I love disco. It was what was popular when I was in high school and some of it will never grow old for me. Some of it is completely forgettable (such as when Elton John went Disco). Speaking of Sir Elton...I've always liked him. Saw him perform in 1981.

Like most of you, I like a little bit of everything. There's very little music that I cannot appreciate on at least some level. I'm not a huge fan of rap, and yet, sometimes, some artists I can groove.

Country is another genre that isn't my favorite, and yet there are artists...Dwight Yoakam in particular that I cannot get enough of. kd lang is another, although she has moved on from country and I love what she does now, too.

You never know what's in my cd player (yes, I'm old school that way, too). Some days dance music, some days mood music, some days...well, you just have to come down to the sewing room to find out.

Jazz, blues, classical, punk, oldies, show tunes...

Hey thanks for posting here, I am sure Jiocash will appreciate it, I sure do! It seems as thought you are one of the most prominent posters on the forum! I didn't mean to offend your disco-appreciation. I am a bit overzealous in that matter, I truly think disco is scary. But I guess you are right, even in the genres of music I almost loathe, there are always a few songs that I can appreciate.
Don't make me feel old! I won't reveal anything about my age, but I can tell you that I still own many CD players! And yes, If I am honest they are going out of style, replaced by todays generation by MP3 files and such, but how else can I play my favorite Glenn Miller songs? (I wish I had some, dare I say it - records of the Glenn Miller orchestra.)

    @BeeDance
WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!? (sorry, I'm not shouting....maybe ;)) Lolz, Bee do you realize that in thanking everyone for not bringing up Biebs, you inherently brought him up yourself! -.->:(:mad:I had given his Blasphemous name to the word Music (you got that part right ;)) no thought or consideration for several months until I stumbled upon the terrible misfortune of reading your latest post! Why? :p
Happily though, I will probably forget this pathetic and less-than-halfhearted tantrum shortly...as Bieber remains very far away in my conscious mind. :) :D

    How about annoying music #2?
You have inspired me to bring it up! Wait for it......FROZEN!
Muahahahahahah, what can you say to that? xD

(Althought I LOVE the "In Summer" song, Olaf is so blissfully ignorant it is adorable) :) :)

Oh wow, well I like some disco although it's usually a mood I'm going for as it is upbeat. Good house cleaning music in other words. Just really the gold stuff from that genre though like the Bee Gees. (hey there is a reason they sold so many albums) In general I prefer the "funk" music from that time like Earth Wind and Fire or Sly and the Family Stone.

Saying CD's are old school is a very big laugh to me. I still have and cherish an extensive record collection. xD You have any idea how hard it is to find replacement needles for a stereo with a turntable? Nothing like an album though and I always took care of mine so may have a pop or crack here or there but no skips.

@spotsbox I saw Wham in concert. xDxDxD Went with a friend that was obsessed with Andrew Ridgely. Katrina and the Waves opened for them. Wow I haven't thought about that one in years. Hey Wham did a rap song on their first album. LOLOLOLOL it was called Wham Rap, OMG it was so terrible.

I know the song Tom Dooley, in fact it's one of the few "folk" songs I can listen to. Not a fan of the folk music in general, although I do like Simon and Garfunkel a great deal and Bob Dylan but they are more mainstream than straight up folk in my opinion.

I lived in Boston for many years and saw a lot of live music and through that learned to love Irish music. There were some really good bands that played in the area at the local pubs. Nothing so much fun to dance to then a really great Irish band that can play a fast reel.

George Clinton...and maybe some Bootsy Collins. Sometimes you gotta get up, get down, get FUNKY!

Most of my DH's theme songs are some odd - first there was "Get a haircut and get a real job" by George Thorogood...and then there's the truck. The 1968 Dodge Truck that is in the garage... I'm burying him in it ala Stevie Ray Vaughn's "Willie the Wimp".

I really like Ursula 1000 and Chris Joss. You will often find me listening to them while I sew. Apparently, they make good music to sew by.

Yeah I guess I did; sorry. I'm still grateful no one listed him as a musician.

The Movies Grease was big when I was in the Navy. It amazed me how many kids & young adults overseas loved American music and movies from that. On the other hand I can not watch a John Travolta movie where he's trying to play a serious role like 'Broken Arrow' without expecting him to start singing & dancing. Yes he kind of ruined disco for me; Olivia Newton John and Stockard Channing redeemed the movie though.

CDs are "old"? Seriously? I have reel-to-reel tapes and so many LP albums as well as 45's (anyone not knowing what those are can look them up in Wikipedia or the Smithsonian web page). I even have an antique Victrola and some antique 78's - those were made before the invention of plastic...

I love my CD player! If I'm working in the house, there's almost always a CD or the radio on. They're not old, they're...classic;). Don't get me wrong, I have an MP3 player, I use it when I'm walking or working outside, and I love that I can download by song and not have to buy an entire album to get the one I want (and then burn a CD with all my favorites:D). And how else can you get those hard to find songs that aren't readily available elsewhere? I resisted them for a long time, tho, refused to give up my WalkManxD. When the belt clip broke, I strung it thru a bandana and wore it like a belt xDxD. When I did finally break down and get an MP3 player, I had to have a 7 year old at the library tell me how to get music on it:p. And vinyl's actually making a huge comeback, wish I had my mom's record collection. I've heard music aficionados say they prefer it over digital.

okay, for some strange reason the smilies didn't work:cry:
