Optimal breeding layouts

As noted in this post, how breeding works might change significantly in the not-too-distant future, at which point this thread may become obsolete.

I've been trying to find the optimal layout for placing breeding pens on the various fields, and I could use some help!

Of course, "optimal" means different things to different farmers. When I started this thread, I was thinking of the sort of layouts in the Beginner's Guide FAQ. I'm interested in hearing any thoughts on layout for breeding, though, and I think this thread would be an appropriate place to share them.

If I consider "optimal layout" to be the most breeding pens possible, then the most 2x2 plots possible, then the most 1x2 plots possible, these are the best layouts I've found so far.

• Mainland total: 84 pens, Tropical total: 54, Overall total: 138 pens
• Main Farm / Green Meadow layout: 29 pens

I have two questions for the community:

1. Can you place more pens than this?
2. I think there's a better way to find the optimal placement than "guess and see if I can do better." Do you know a better way?

 

Baha and the Rainforest are the same size as the Glade I believe.

 

Just curious, why would you want to use the maximum? Your calculation already is up to 84 for the three fields, which is far more than I would do at one time ever. Do you have a short window for BBD weekend in RL that doesn't allow for multiple harvests or are you really planning on spending that much powerfeed? (I never clear all my fields, just one with the trees left up, is plenty.

 

@Banjoman: Thanks for the reply! I did some counting and can confirm that the Glade and Bahamarama are almost exactly the same size, I hadn't noticed! Bahamarama has room for the same number of 2x2 and 2x1 plots, and room for 4 more 1x1 plots than the Glade. The layouts are a little different, though. I was sortof hoping someone would take a picture of an optimal breeding layout on Bahamarama for me, since I can't take the picture myself.

@Aetheria14: Thanks for the reply! To answer your question, I guess I was just thinking it would be nice to know. I guess it might take a while to collect that much power-feed! I liked the optimal layouts listed in the FAQs and wanted to make something like that with information about breeding pens too. I also just think it's fun. Also, I'm a fairly new player, so I might be thinking about optimizing breeding a little strangely since I don't understand how everything works yet.

About baha and the magical glade: Baha is slightly bigger like you found out farmer2954 You can place 188 1x1 plots on each of the baha fields (they have the same layout) while the glade takes 184. Using 2x2 you can place 41 on baha and 40 in the glade (builder will however only place 40 on baha and 39 in the glade).

I looked through the thread more, and the Mathe und Co. spreadsheet they linked to, and they came to the same numbers I did for the Magical Glade(26) and Main Farm(29). I might look back to their work to verify some of my other math and maybe to get some ideas. There's a lot of great work there! I don't speak German (yet!) but I could still understand some of it, I guess math is the same everywhere

That thread is another one with lots of useful info It also says that without the last part of baha opened, you can place 19 breeding huts, no picture of that though.

 

I have tried to do these "optimal breeding layouts"...but for me it's too chaotic! I have to have my huts all lined up in a row. Especially since my mouse has been acting up lately.

 

I set my 2x2 plots up so that they can be easily converted to 2x3 breeding sheds. I then put pens/workshops/trees around them. I leave the 2x2 in the lower left corner as a crop field because for some reason, I have accidentally deleted stuff in that general area when trying to change other stuff. This works well for me. More breeding sheds would only make me go through PF that much faster. I already have 88 breeding sheds out as it is when I use all my spaces. (I keep 4 breeding sheds out at all times. One each in mainfield, meadow, rainforest and baha. These "spaces" can be used in an emergency for just about any need.) I will rethink my layouts once the new breeding setup is live.

 

@-Mir85-: Thanks again for the reply! I found that thread very helpful too, and I can use Google Translate with it, unlike the spreadsheet. I think their tables and pictures are pretty, I'm inspired! I tried my hand at making some layouts.

@Brookeham: Thanks for the reply! I hadn't thought about setting up my pens for ease of clicking, makes sense. I'm glad to hear other ides about what makes a good layout.

If I remember correctly, the new breeding setup was previewed in the OA here. There is no announced date as to when this will be effective.
