Is that Lotte's ear tag? o_O:(

    Red eye was only Flash...
Mir you won - Twig accidentally ripped out her daughter Lotte's ear tag!!! :) They were feeding together and accidentally got hooked up. I was there but couldn't do anything, as they both panicked. Luckily, very little bleeding, just have to order a replacement ear tag and punch poor Lotte's other ear :(

But on the up side, managed to get a cute video of Hector playing with me, always difficult close up as he likes to hog the picture frame... but he's a cuty pie - hope you agree!

Poor Lotte...having to have another ear tag. I guess now she will be one of the cool, hip girls....with multiple piercings.:p LOLxD
Hector just steals my heart.:inlove: He is so darn cute! Yes, you've really enlightened me how much personality each of them have. Do they let you snuggle & really pet & love on them?:music:

Hector, Katya, Boris, Mischa and Lotte certainly love attention, in that order as to how much... Twiglet and Ana don't... they are still quite wild children, I am lucky to get the occasional stroke from the last two and have to really fight when it comes to vitamins, injections, hoof trimming. But the first 5, I can cuddle, treat/inject & trim front hooves mostly without even a lead rope... Rear hooves are a different matter as we hop around the paddock together!!!

Guinea.. that brought a tear to my eye... I love it when people "get" these beautiful reindeer.. but it can be a double ended sword...

I have a friend that has just lost her much loved castrate after a mystery illness - he went downhill (at 5 years old) within 2 weeks (I hope she gets a Post Mortem done) and I lost Mischa's calf (born the same day as Lotte and far bigger) at 3 days old (the second loss for her :( )...
As I share my whole herds ups and downs, then there may be sad times too, as nothing is hidden!!
Mischa should be in calf again and she is a wonderful reindeer but she is not good at producing live calves ... She has so far (twice) produced rear hooves breach, and once rear hooves appear she forgets producing and carries on grazing/browsing - unless you are looking carefully you can't even see little hooves under her tail!!! They have both had to be "pulled", first one we couldn't resuscitate despite everything... This year Little Eric was revived after a major ordeal but on day 3 at 4am I found him limp and couldn't bring his core temperature up enough to even have feed...
To share all can be scary as it has to be laid bare - ups AND downs... :(

Picture, Mischa's little calf Eric (on day 2) that I lost and he would have been competition for the cutems award!

To anyone who hasn't followed - these pictures of mother's look dreadful BUT it is normal for reindeer to look dreadful in early summer, the moult goes on for months as they loose their thick winter coats... :(

You share life with us Karen, and that means good times and bad. The joys of the good times are often sweeter because we remember the sorrows. Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful reindeer with us; I always look forward to your posts.:)

Sorry Karen, didn't mean to make you tear up! I can just really relate to all you've gone thru and will go thru. While I have not been graced with raising such rare/exotic animals as your Reindeer herd, I have raised/bred several breeds of goats for the past 13 yrs (and horses for almost 40 yrs now). I have definitely seen more than my share of the goings on at the business end of Mommies to be (and their udders/bags), lol. I've spent many sleepless nights bedded down on the straw in the barn in a sleeping bag cuddling a chilled baby, and being OCD about carrying a baby monitor with me everywhere every time I left the barn. I've dealt with re positioning and/or pulling breeches, plus experienced some stillborns... and all the ughs of all of that being so stressful and trudging thru the heartbreaks when I tried so hard to make sure everything was perfect. But thankfully it's so rewarding and heartwarming when everything does go perfectly. So I fully appreciate all you do and go thru for your herd!
Thanks again for sharing... the good, the bad and the ugly :)

PS... RIP to little precious Eric

Oh Guinea... thank you. You have been there too.. awful, awful awful at times BUT so much happiness too!! I do worry how much I share at times, as if something dreadful happens I won't be able to hide, as all know now who will be expecting babies in May and the names of my big babies!!!
DON'T intend to loose any this year, but sometimes nature has it's own say!!!!
And Willow thank you so much, at times the downs seem too much to cope with BUT the ups certainly see me through.. and they are big ups....
My silly "down" today is BORIS - he has a big weekend in 4 days and he has decided to strip his antlers to look like something from a horror movie - 2 years ago he dropped them just before his first big booking... got to love him...
Thanks all for following and your lovely comments. :)

    Feeling bereft... :(

Katya & Hector have gone to stay at a local Christmas Tree Farm! I said I would never leave reindeer at a venue but they are with a wonderful family, the husband is a farmer and the wife a vet (and my vet lives on the next door farm & is a family friend of theirs). They are under 24 hours CCTV and I am getting daily updates and possibly skypes. I agreed to it in the summer and I know they can't be in better hands and I can visit daily BUT.... I will still miss them beyond.. :(
One of this afternoons update photos - even I can't deny that they don't seem to be missing me!!! :(

It's a testament to how they were raised that they are comfortable in a new environment. :)
