I had to scrape my windows for the first time this season.. ugh! I know the cold is actually overdue here, but I could have used another postponement.

Raining continuously for nearly 26 to 28 hrs without a break. The total rainfall in Chennai has crossed 144 cm thus breaking the 1918 year record of 108.8 cm which had stood as the highest record for the City. I might not be able to go to work tomorrow too. Once again Highways & Train routes, roads every thing flooded due to excessive rain & water release from Lakes, floods in rivers etc. Important Roadways & Railways leading to Chennai are cut off. Boats on roads once again to save people. These are all man-made disasters. Disregarding & encroaching water bodies & water ways in the name of so called development has lead to floods. Water has no channels to pass through. Every thing is encroached. Water bodies have not been de-silted. We have failed to recognise their importance in ecological balance.

A snake attempts to escape the rising water at the Perumal temple in Mamallapuram (situated in the neighbouring district of Kanchipuram) a renowned place for rock cut temples, sculptures Etc.

Thank you. I am keeping safe. So is my family. Our area is not prone to flood as its nearer to sea & water drains immediately into sea. But evacuation of people are being done continuously in other areas. Army, Navy is also employed. Airport is also temporarily shut down. It has been raining for 3 days. Rain for 4 more days are predicted. The rain which is now going on started around 5 in the evening, yesterday, when I returned from my work. It has not stopped even for a single minute. In another 30 mins it will be midnight here. Still no sign of it stopping. Hope there will be no lives lost. People have on their own started helping others by reaching the needy through social media & offering help and shelter.

baw815 I too was amazed at seeing the picture. I have never seen such a picture of snake in such an captivating environment. It was put in one of the newspaper. Its a stone pillar & there is only few feet between the roof and water level. The snake coiling around the idol too. Thought it would be interesting. So shared it.

Good Night. Going to sleep. Let's see if tomorrow brings any good news.

Amazing photo! So glad people are helping each other. When a stalled tropical system comes into our area we've had rain like that; but thankfully it is a rare occurrence. I hope the rains begin to lessen soon.

People are suffering a lot. Marooned. Without food, water, milk & medicine. No electricity in several places. Railways, Roadways & Airways are totally cut from Chennai.

Airport shut till tomorrow morning. Trains stopped. Buses are very very limited. Chennai is now an island surrounded by water on all sides. Navigation now poses a great problem. Only boats are saving the people. In many places, people they themselves now have started making rafts & catamarans from logs to save stranded people by themselves. People are sending help through medias, websites, mobile on their own that they can accommodate such a number of people with them or offering foods, blankets medicines etc., It has now become "People for People".

Adyar River in spate flowing over the Maraimalai Adigal Bridge in Saidapet. This is a bridge in the heart of the city. Now the bridge is shut & traffic on it is stopped. Chennai has been split into two due to this. The road like thing beneath the water is the bridge. The one above the water is the Metro rail track whose construction is currently going on.

I am fortunate enough to be safe with my family in my house. No flooding here. I think this is one of the very very very few places which are not flooded. Places few Kms from here are very much flooded.

Sorrowful news, I don't think I've ever seen that much water flooding a populated area. Sending up a pray the rain subsides & the suffering it is causing will end.

Hope the continuous rains doesn't cause any damage to life or property, TCRooster.

Heavy Rains in Chennai & sub-urban started once again after a break of one day. Here the sky is very dangerously dark & rains have started. But MET has predict that there will be a relief from rainfall for a day more. So hoping no more rain for today & tomorrow. Even many hospitals are flooded. Electricity is one of the major problem & mobile signals (nearly 50%) are not working/not reachable. Death toll is rising. Thousands are still stranded. People washed away in front of your eyes. 18 people died in an hospital one after the other as life saving machineries were running on fuels due to non availability of current and machineries disfunctioned due to water/flood. Almost majority of people have to start from scratch. Everything washed away in floods. Flood waters have receded only a little. I do not know if the houses will be strong anymore as they have been in water for several days.

You are more than welcome to swap places with me Ariel! It has temporarily stopped raining, which is good because today Mr TC had to drive down the hill to collect our drive - all the gravel got washed down the hill!xDxD
@12ss12 I do hope your horrific weather gets better soon. England is notorious for its wet weather but rarely is our weather a danger to life.

    Glad to hear that TCRooster

And thank you friends for your concern.

Schools and colleges reopened here after nearly 33 days. Rains have totally stopped in north part of Tamilnadu. Rehabilitation process is on the way & Normalcy has been restored to some extent. Rainy season will end in 2 or 3 days. So every thing is safe.

It has rained all over Tamilnadu. Every place I travel I find greenery, water bodies full, and fields, rivers, streams, lakes etc everything is full. Lots of migratory birds have come. I see cranes and storks too. I have vacation starting next week. So if possible, I shall try to get some photos of it.

12ss12 glad to hear school started again! It will be very difficult to get back to normal after this long period. Since you don't celebrate Christmas, students won't have holidays soon right?

I live in Florida,USA and we might break a record. It is suppose to be 86 degrees. Hard to get in the holiday spirit with it being so warm. Suppose to get a cold snap this weekend, maybe that will help!

@Willow Some of the bird pictures are under editing. I will post them as soon as I find time.

Yes, Arielh it is very difficult to get back to normal, not only in school but also in real life. Because everything washed away in floods, majority of schools children do not have books, notebooks or uniforms. Steps are being taken to provide them all these.

There are free mechanic workshops opened because all vehicles were washed away or were under water. My uncle's office which is in first floor with more than 5 computer and accessories and furniture, documents was down under water and water level stopped short of few feet from his ceiling. And still no repair work undertaken as there everyone needs repair & it would take time, even for the insurance officials to come and visit.

You know something ? our Met scientist who announces the weather report became very popular with students. Because everyday he announced rains & vacations extended. He became their favourite.

We have holidays for all important religious function of all religion. This 23rd, its Milad-i-nabi and hence a holiday. School children have Christmas vacation for 10 days and their Half-yearly closes by Christmas. But this time - no as they already had holidays for 33 days.

May be I will try to send some rain clouds to Brookeham. Its still raining in south part of our state. But these rain clouds won't listen to anyone.

@Brookeham I envy you. You are close to nature and provide food to the world. My grandparents and even now most of my relatives are farmers too. My parents migrated to the city. So we have become metropolitan. But I visit my native place very much. Make it a point to be there for few days atleast once in 3 months. My relatives are scattered in several districts. Even if I miss a vacation, I get phone calls from my relatives. Since its usually during vacations or family functions, it will be like a get together. There are only 2 more working days for me. Then its Christmas Vacation. So holiday for 10 days. Next working day is only on 4th of Jan.
