Do they ever "call" to each other?

Caviar, the only time you hear a vocal noise from a reindeer is a "honk" from a calf or grunting from mother in the first few weeks after birth (Summer) if they get separated. Apart from that, they make a clicking noise (tendon rubbing on bone in foot) to keep herd together in blizzards etc. Any vocal noise would loose body heat - obviously not a problem in the UK but that is one of the wonderful ways these beautiful creatures have adapted to cope with Very cold climates.

Today's video starts with me "hiding" behind a branch to get far enough away from Hector for some footage, then ends with me backing away while he chases me for a head rub.... must stop this before he has BIG antlers (that should stick forwards too) next year. :( There are practical issues with very tame reindeer!!!

    Great video Karen;)
Hector looked quite annoyed -.-that you wouldn't hold still and be a head scratching post for him lol. (He's only a little bit spoiled rotten huh Karen? xDLOL). I can see how that could be a major problem if he's still trying that when he grows his next set of antlers... I definitely wouldn't want him sneaking up behind me, that's for sureo_O

    Just a thought for today....

Despite the babies having been separated from their mothers' for nearly 3 months, for weaning and then the rut, it is lovely to see that now the herd is back together, babies and mothers usually graze side by side.
It looks as if family bonds are strong in a reindeer herd. :)

Happy New Year to you all and Thank You for following, year round...
We have day to day management to come (training, worming, inoculations and there is always the traumas that aren't expected) but our hopes for 2016 is "up to" 4 calves.. all depends if my girls "liked" Monty. 2 proven mothers', plus 1 first time (my unicorn, Ana) and Mischa my wonderful reindeer girl who has had really bad luck so far... BUT 3rd time lucky... This year she WILL have a baby to tend, even if she can't feed it - (if I am hand rearing, 2 hourly feeds round the clock and I will be driving you crazy, posting to keep me awake ;) :0 :) !!!! )...

Scary thing is, I have lots of space (acres) to increase my herd but not enough of me to exhibit elsewhere.
Could employ other to help.. but only seasonal and would need more vehicles and trailers.... but only for 4 weeks of the year...
or if I breed more I need to sell babies..... it's a difficult one!! :(
    Don't ask me yet - I don't know :(

Wishing you and the reindeer "All the Best" for 2016 and beyond! I am hoping with fingers crossed Mischa will be a healthy, happy mother this year:inlove: and I am not sure I could sell my babies either..that would be a real tough decision to have to make! But until then lets all just watch and enjoy the months to come! Thanks for the posts!:inlove:

A little DIY in the paddocks today, was hampered by Hector.
The saying "don't bend over your toolbox" comes to mind!
Someone said they hoped all this seasons (expected) calves were like Hector... NOOOOO!!! ;)
Pictures are after I distracted him with branches, to get up close and personal with!!!
