I have two items to share. First: Nutria wasn't the only transplanted critter who eventually took over. How about the "Love Bugs" introduced by the Florida university under the premise that said bugs would eat Mosquitoes, thus keeping the little stinger population in check. Come to find out said bugs couldn't care any less about those flying pests. However they do love to swarm and destroy paint on cars! Thanks loads guys.

Second: Before I retired I launched Titan Rockets. Over the course of my career I was sent to Cape Canaveral to help them launch from time to time. There I met a wonderful man who was the "Lead Man" or Boss if you will. He told the story of having moved down to the Cape in the early 60's. He'd purchased a home on a canal and his children spent the summer swimming in the water. Until one day they saw a twenty foot+ gator swimming lazily up the canal. The gentleman asked his neighbor if this was a normal thing. His neighbor replied: "Sure is. That gator lives under the bridge right there. I just figured you didn't like your kids much." Needless to say our Lead Man contracted to have a pool built in his back yard with a fence surround the next day!

Oh my, that's one big fish story!o_O:wuerg:xD (yes, I know, gators aren't fish:p) No gators here, just grizzlies with bad attitudes;). I used to love to spend our spring vacations hiking, usually by myself. Griz have become so populated it's not safe to do alone anymore:(. Pips, you make me feel somewhat inferior - an Eagle Scout AND a rocket scientist:eek: (purely an assumption on my part, I've no idea what qualifications you need for that job, but I'm betting it's quite impressive)!

Oh I know the love bugs well...and you will not love them. The worst thing that was ever done.
And yes living in Florida we have Gators everywhere, we're just used to them. Back in the 60's-70's they were not so bad I remember as a kid swimming in the river with them. They were afraid of people but then they were put on the endangered list and people started to feed them, they lost their fear of people and we became overrun with them.

My father spent 50 years working there. He worked on the Shuttle program and the Titans...maybe your paths crossed :)

sirpippen - Sheesh...a very scary story about the alligator! After your brief history....which does sound impressive, I looked up Titan rockets. Wow! Amazing read....hundreds of missions and not one crash! You must be 1 smart guy!;)
My Dad, while in the army, worked with sending monkeys into space. He loved it...especially the chimps! He took videos and we all got to see his slide show of his experiences.
JJenks - Wouldn't that be something if your Dad & sirpippen knew each other?:music:

Back to growing more carrots......and potatoes.:sleepy:

So glad I don't have alligators to contend with. I live up north in the U.S. and anything I try to plant is devoured by the deer. The raccoons ate all of my koi fish. (They were 5 to 6 inches long in my little pond.) Now we have an infestation of wild turkeys, that totally destroy your lawn. But I guess they were here first, so I kind of put up with the destruction of my plants. I think I'll plant all garlic and see what happens. Will probably outlive all of us. Take care.

    Definitely not the only ones....
Just a sampling of some more that were intentionally introduced:
Carp (introduced because "of course" the native species here just were not as suitable for eating or fishing)
Brown Trout (not sure why, since we have native trout... probably just that they were grown in hatcheries in Europe).
Black flies (apparently introduced here in PA)
    Kudzu
    Elephant Ears (a plant)
    Water hyacinth
    Night crawlers (earth worms)
    Pigs (wild boars)
    Pigeons

and that is not even getting into those transplanted from one part of the US to another or the many accidental introductions!
Zebra muscles, just to name one. Norway Rats and dandelions for a couple more.

From all your post, I have learnt one thing. The story is same everywhere. All indigenous floras & faunas are taken for granted. They are either by neglect or by calculative action are brought to the verge of vanishing. In the name of development & green revolution, white revolution etc., breeds/species alien to the land is brought and after a decade or two, the people then learn that the indigenous varieties are suitable to their land and to their health and environment. But by that time those indigenous varieties become scarce or costly to get. That's happening in our country too.
