Sad news today... Won't mention which Alaskan reindeer farm, as bad news isn't always shared in public but another reindeer farm in Alaska have had their first calves. Their first were a set of twins (very rare event) but neither survived.. unfortunately, with the rare event of twins being born, it appears having one survive is a major bonus but usually both die... :( ... I don't want twins....
On an upbeat note I have just had delivered a picnic bench as a late birthday present from the In-Laws... Sounds odd I know, but wonderful - I now, no longer, have to lay in wet grass when I am on calving watch. I can sit with a flask of coffee and a book (maybe) once the girls start "running the fenceline".. and when a few close friends' children want to see the babies in the early days, I have somewhere to locate them. It stops the children trying to always get closer... I have always said (close friends can come to watch babies at a distance) once the babies are a couple of weeks old... but the kids that know my herd always try to creep forward.. I now have a base for watching!!! :)

What a great gift, they must know how much you will enjoy it! :) It is sad to hear about the loss of twins on one of the Alaskan farms.

Alaska update.... even more unusual (in fact a first, if it is so) but one farm thinks they had triplets born... not sure yet as it happened in their "wild reindeer" paddock and all 3 babies were within a few feet of each other and so far can't see signs that another reindeer having calved. Babies were all small, 5.8lbs, 6 lbs and the only surviving is 7lbs but mother won't feed her so she's in the house being hand reared, so an uphill struggle. She won't stand and only drinking a little but she has peed and pooed, and if she is premmy it takes a while... Keep your fingers crossed.
They haven't had a 7lb baby survive yet... but Lotte was 7lbs - it was a struggle but as you all have seen she's a healthy yearling now... so there is hope...

PS., Did I mention on here, not sure but all 4 girls that "went to bull" are pregnant. I didn't think Ana was but have seen massive kicks in her tummy this week. So expecting 4 new arrivals not 3. Ana as a first timer and Mischa who never calves well will be a struggle to keep babies alive but a potential of 4 babies... Excitement and heartache just around the corner... :( Only 3 weeks till round the clock watch...

Will keep fingers crossed (good thoughts) for the surviving baby and that the Alaska farm will take heart in your experience with a 7lb baby. Lots of fingers crossed (good thoughts) for your ladies too!

Thoughts and well wishes with both Alaska and you as you face the challenges of early deliveries. I sure hope the one above makes it.

Alaska update... The surviving triplet is still with us. She isn't drinking as much as they would like but she has made several attempts to stand today, so she is getting stronger... Her survival chance has now gone up to 30% with surviving first 24 hours...
For some reason I can't share video.
At the moment this video isn't on their Home Page but sure it will be soon. If you want to follow her progress - she's Williams Reindeer (Alaska) but please adults/or supervised only as she has a long way to go and may not make it... but she is a little miracle already... :)

Please don't ask them for the updates as just had news that she didn't make it - she died 30 minutes ago... not the only person that is sobbing their socks off that this miracle baby is no longer with us...
Let's hope their is a rainbow bridge...

I'm already at mega stress level with other peoples losses (I get rather emotionally involved - reindeer are very strange, they get right under your skin) and I still have a couple of weeks to go for full term babies... But stress levels are high...
I still grieve for baby Nadya that I lost 2 years ago, her mother abandoned her. I hand reared in the house for 4 days (2 hourly feeds round the clock) she also slept with me when I didn't hear my alarm she would suck my nose - she coincided with a bitch with puppies who would clean/stimulate excretions and also give a sneaky feed... We had a lovely household pack/herd until I panicked that Nadya wasn't taking enough food - vet tubed her and she died during procedure..
I am listening to Shiva chants... always do at times of stress.... try them... they do help!

We grieve with you and the Alaska farms. Please do think of all the babies that survive! Think good thoughts when you are out with your herd. You don't want them to pick up on your stress. Our thoughts are with you!

Such sad news for the Alaska Farm:cry:they must be heartbroken, as we all share in their grief. I do believe in the Rainbow Bridge as it helps me deal with such losses. Your Shiva Chants are beautiful and my thoughts and prayers are with you and your herd also!
