Where is home/land?

I was born 35 miles south of Scottish border and lived there for 20 years. I'ts a small world.

 

High Court of Madras.
(Indo-Saracenic style of architecture)​

Just wanted to share the architectural beauty with you all. This building always fascinates me and Madras Law College is a part of this building. You have the cemetery of son of Yale (founder of Yale University in England) inside the college campus. Madras University, Central Railway Station and Egmore Railway Station are built in this style and they function till today. These are just few building I mentioned. There are lot more.

• One of the three Chartered High Courts in India established Charter of Queen Victoria, 26 June 1862
• Built in 1892
• Design prepared by J.W. Brassington and later bythe famed architect Henry Irwin who completed it with the assistance of J.H. Stephens.
• High Court building was bombed by German Warship S.M.S. Emden on 22 September 1914, at the beginning of the First World War. There is a Memorial stone at that place. Madras now Chennai was the only Indian City to be bombed during World War. Emden became a name for for a awesome person or anyone who moved fast, struck hard etc.,
• The painted ceilings and the stained glass doors are masterpieces in themselves.
• The old lighthouse of the city is housed within the High Court campus (the tower without the dome)
• The complex houses the largest number of courts in Asia and the Advocates Association here is the largest association in Asia.

Why aren't they building such buildings anymore?! Could they even, do you think??!!

While writing about the vikings GW thread I realized I hadn't posted here and I believe it's about time.

Well, I'm from Spain. I was born in a big town Toledo, cause in Torrijos, my hometown there weren't (and still aren't) any hospitals.

Torrijos has just over 12.000 inhabitants and is known for its ham (jamón serrano) and vinegar industry.
My parents still live there, in a very old house between the church and the palace. Soon, they will be moving out to a new house.
This new house has something that's worth to tell.

You know palaces and castles, in case they were attacked, had tunnels to escape to safer places. One of these tunnels goes by my new parent's house.
The tunnel was blocked years ago. There's no way we can go into the castle (in case you were wondering), so we have decided to use it as a cellar. We'll be storing wine in a place that was built 600 years ago!!! How cool is that?
Last year I helped removing some rocks and dirt just to make it a bit bigger.
I'll be there this summer, if it's done I will post some pics.

When I turned 18 I moved to Madrid, to study and then work, where I stayed until last year (with some trips in between).
Ammm, Real Madrid (soccer team) supporters are called vikings.

While studying to become a teacher I realized that if I were going to teach English, I needed to be fluent. And this is when my life changed. I found my passion: travelling!

So for my first solo trip abroad, I went to the furthest place from Spain, New Zealand. It took me 33 hours.
I looked online and if you dig a hole in Madrid, and cross to the other side of the Earth, you would appear just 100 miles of Wellington, which is where I lived for 2 months.

And then...
Dunlavin, Ireland for a month
Växjö, Sweden (land of vikings) for 4 months
Saint Paul, Minnesota (viking football team) for one year.

And recently, last july, I moved to Omaha, Nebraska.

So where is homeland?
I have great memories from every place and wherever I go I feel like home.

However, all my family is in Spain so that will always be my homeland.
I don't see myself settling down in the States, but who knows...

@12ss12 I still need to see the South of India. I've been to Mumbai and the north. My parents went to the south and my mom has great memories of Madras.

escalonilla, you have a secret tunnel in your home? Wonderful. It must be a heritage house. You have traveled to a great many places, that too across countries. That must have been wonderful. I too loved your post. Very interesting. Please post more pictures.

 

I like the roof structures. And such a lot of windows in every buildings. Looks breathtaking and beautiful too.

 

Pallikaranai Marsh Land​

• Pallikaranai wetland is a freshwater swamp in the city of Chennai, India.
• And one of the most significant wetlands of the country
• It is situated adjacent to the Bay of Bengal,
• Area of 80 square kilometres (31 sq mi).
• Pallikaranai marshland is the only surviving wetland ecosystem of the city
• Other 2 wetlands in Tamilnadu are Point Calimere and Kazhuveli.
• The topography of the Swamp is such that it always has some water thus forming an aquatic ecosystem.
• Contains rare, migratory and endangered flora & fauna.
• Birds in the pictures here are

Thanks "abc". Stockholm does look quite nice in the summer but in the winter when it's freezing it doesn't have the same appeal I'm afraid

Athens, the capital of Greece
​

The Parthenon is a temple on the Acropolis (it means in the highest place of the town), dedicated to the goddess Athena. Construction began in 447 BC and it was completed in 438 BC. The architects were Callicrates and Ictinus and the sculptor was Phidias. The Parthenon is regarded as an enduring symbol of Ancient Greece and Athenian democracy.

In Acropolis there is another temple called Erechtheio which was dedicated to both goddess Athena and god Poseidon. Instead of columns, six female statues, the Caryatids, support the roof. (photo taken by me)

The Panathenaic Stadium, also known as the Kallimarmaro hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 . Reconstructed from the remains of an ancient Greek stadium which was built in 329 B.C. It has been used for other several events and athletics in Athens.

The Academy of Athens is Greece's national academy, and the highest research establishment in the country. It was established in 1926 and the Academy's main building is one of the major landmarks of Athens.

Hellenic Parliament
Initially this building was the Palace for king Othon and George but now is where the parliament of Greece takes decisions, votes and meets. (photo taken by me)
