New Baby reindeer to my herd

Pleased to hear that Hector and Elsa are still getting on well, so at least she has one friend!

 

Hmmm, I am thinking if Hector likes Elsa, then she can't be all bad! Maybe she will settle in with the rest of the herd in time!

 

It's always hard to be the new kid on the block. I'm sure Elsa will accept the others and be accepted in time.

 

There's a wonderful short video documentary (under 3 minutes) about the Mongolian reindeer herders - don't think I'm allowed to share link but if interested I am sure a search with the name Joel Santos and Mongolian reindeer herders should find it for you.

Thank you Karen. That is a very interesting video. Those three reindeer seem much older than your herd.
Their antlers are HUGE. It is nice to see other herders love their babies, too.

 

joanc yes they will be castrates and by the looks of them about 10 years. Females aren't ridden by herders.

And if you are wondering how they castrate in the middle of nowhere, then it's one video I won't be sharing.
We use general anaesthetics and surgical procedures - they use their teeth! Eek

I would have to walk many miles in you herders footsteps to fully understand.

 

That is a great video, those reindeer sure do have a tough life out in the wild even though they are part of a farmed herd! I also will NOT be searching for that castrate video as just the thought of it gives me the creeps! They do look well cared for and have beautiful antlers! Thanks for sharing!

PS I'm delighted I removed Hector's antlers, as today he was determined to playfully head butt me round the paddock, even bomping him on the nose with a flexible bucket didn't dissuade him!

Here's a picture of the whole herd today.
A while ago someone came to meet them and asked "however do I tell them apart?" - to me it is easy & I get the feeling to others who have never met them but have followed their progress, that they could put a name to at least half. No need to reply but a little teaser if you also have a cold wet Sunday!
Names are (but not in order) Boris, Hector, Mischa, Twiglet, Elsa, Katya, Ana, Lottie, Lexi, Freya (list is males first, then females in descending order of age).
I will do a left to right update in a couple of days.

 

Beautiful picture (still phone or new camera?). Boris is the far left and Hector is far right. Lottie is closest to you, Lexi is second from the right, then Ana, and Freya is laying down in the back. Sorry, that is my best guess. Did I get one right?

 

My guess(so far).....Boris far left, then Lexi... Freya in background lying down and far far right is Hector.

 

I think Freya is walking towards you on the left with her big girl antlers and 3rd from the right is Lexie with her one antler!

 

Everyone has got Hector!

But so far Boris has changed sex - he's been identified as his female doppelganger Babies the wrong way round - it's hard to see antlers in photo, you have to go on facial markings.
Joan - if you mean Lotte 6th from left - well done, & you got Ana too, they were the more tricky ones! And yes my phone.

So between you all, you are nearly there!
