Oh last year...... GOT TO LOVE BORIS . My first major problem was (luckily) a child's Birthday Party... overnight Boris decided he would go from almost full velvet to a half bloody mass. All I could do was spray his antlers in a veterinary product "Aluspray" which is basically a silver spray equivalent to a (spray) bandage but he looked like Metal Mickey but my only alternative was to leave him be and frighten all the kids that he was a late Halloween surprise, luckily they thought he looked cool with silver antlers! But his next booking was a wedding, so I couldn't do the tacky silver antlers so had to wash off the Aluspray and touch up his bloody patches with Clinique Foundation... not sure the tax office will believe my claims for this product BUT it is true! :)

Boris is a great character. Let's just hope the Sustenon doesn't do for him what it does for humans, or else he could become one very confused reindeer! I agree that Frodo is looking a lot better now than when you first had him. You do work miracles!

Frodo has really improved. I understand your reservations from experience, but you have given him a marvelous chance for a good life. We all wish the best for him and you.

Regarding the Clinique use - have you considered letting the company know about a wonderful new application of their product? Who knows, they may decide to contact you!:)

Mischa needs some virtual hugs.... :(
At this evening's feed I found her with what appears to be a burst abscess.
It is now cleaned with saline, sprayed with terramyacin, administered antibiotics & replaced her head collar as her old one covered in puss. It is obviously very painful as I treated it. Her temperature is normal but it may explain why she hasn't been eating with her normal vigour. There had been no obvious sign of a stab injury (blood), so the cause may be as innocuous as a blackthorn or it may have been a bloodless puncture from an antler - who knows but the poor girl was in quite a mess and not happy being handled which is odd for her.

She will need major intervention for days... I am wondering if infection may be draining down from antler and if so it will need to be removed... She is part of my main show team but her life is way more important than her antler/show season...

P&P I too love your "reindeer hugs". How wonderful of you to take the time to find them.
Mischa update.. Spoke to vet first thing but he said that he felt a visit was unnecessary with the antibiotics I had administered and bathing as he couldn't do anymore but he's on standby if she doesn't improve.
Good news is that I had an extra pair of hands to hold her steady (as it really hurts when bathing site) so I stripped the velvet that she had half heartedly stripped and no signs of infection higher than site of abscess. Have moved on to potassium permangulate to bathe... Abscess site has opened up now. "Ozziness" this afternoon seems to have stopped (or free draining so not obvious) but there is a "core" of solid infection still - some of which I managed to remove with forceps.... Wound is now quite large but I can now see some healthy tissue... Picture is before this mornings first bathing as I forget to take after our trauma of bathing. It being open is good though.. Will try to remember to photo's tomorrow after bathing.

Also weaned Tigga and Belle today - that normally would be my main story!

I am glad you had some help today, as I am sure the bathe you do on her antler must either sting or burn some, like a human pouring alcohol or peroxide on a human cut or wound! Poor Mischa, I just hope it heals!;) I bet Tigga and Belles moms are VERY happy today!

What a day you have had! Very glad to hear the infection is localized - and that you had help in bathing the area.

Getting it open and down to healthy tissue is good. Help is always appreciated. Keep up the good work! :)
