Asking for prayers for my granddaughter as she drives home from work . A 50 mile drive from New Orleans to home and she has to cross the Mississippi River bridge. Wrecks are everywhere. She is on the road now. Snow is still falling.

tell her to drive slowly and remember that when she needs to stop or apply the brakes to pull her transmission into neutral. It keeps you from getting squirrely when you stop or slow down quickly. I learned this from my husband (we live in Montana so driving on snow and ice is de rigueur).

Both of you are in my thoughts.

She is too terrified to answer her phone, and I am on pins and needles waiting to hear from her. They are starting to close bridges, once she gets on this side of the Mississippi I will feel a little better.
She is now safely home. So very thankful.

It's a booming business here, too (repair shops) because of the deer and the drunks and the fact that at least half the drivers here think that the rules of the road don't apply to them. heavy sigh.

I am just glad that your daughter made it home safely. She needs to practice to be ready when the ice and snow do come to your area of the country. I thought my husband was nuts first time he told me to put the car in neutral before coming up to a stop sign or stop light. But then I started to feel the back end of my car start to go squirelly and I put it neutral and he (I have a 'boy' car - his name is Petey) straightened right out and I was able to stop and stay in my lane. Dontcha hate it when you have to admit to the DH that he's right?

lady2, glad your daughter got home safely!

bunny, I thought shifting into neutral was advised against with the new cars and the... whatever braking.
I've driven in ice before. One time I couldn't control the car at all and was on a downward slope. I knew braking wouldn't do any good so I just sat there and coasted into another car. I did have manual transmission at the time so I think I did shift to neutral. Not sure if I had snow tires or studded tires but it was sort of a freak storm. I moved to warmer climes.

There was a news report lately of an increase of vehicle v bear collisions. No winners in those battles.
