I took this directly from Wiki about the origins of the Yule Log but I suspect the Yule Log which your chickadee wants to know about is the edible one of which I have given some examples, also taken from Wiki, along with a description:

"The Yule log, Yule clog, or Christmas block is a specially selected log burnt on a hearth as a Christmas tradition in a number of countries in Europe. "

"A "Yule log" (or bûche de Noël in France) is a traditional dessert served near Christmas, especially in Belgium, France, Switzerland, Quebec and several former French colonies. Made of sponge cake to resemble a miniature actual Yule log, it is a form of sweet roulade."

As for where you can get them, they are widely available in France and the United Kingdom but not sure about other countries.
