    Yes that's the same boy but he has changed in every way. I never saw him run last year (I don't think).
    This is a picture of him this time last year AFTER he had started to gain weight.

    How fun, scary, wonderful and stressful for you. As a Gentleman, he must have sweet-talked his ladies last year... :music:
    No running required. :p Thank you for the video, Karen. :)

    It may have been I'm truly late with my name vote. if so o_Ooops :wuerg:
    I followed a link from joanc123 and found myself at a haven of Reindeer and started reading from where I popped up. I think I may have wondered by this way before but only glanced. Wonderful beast they are. I have enjoyed looking at all of them and there is a lot to read to catch up on. I know nothing of the history of Baby reindeer and her family. If I am late, could you tell me if you did name her Ana.
    also if you should have sometime could someone tell me a little about this thread? xDI know it's about Reindeer BUT ... are they adopted, rescued, breed, breed by accident:p
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I'm back was just reading a little more and YES her name is ANA :inlove:
    Welcome Frootloop... Where to start to catch you up!!!
    They are my herd of 15 reindeer, mainly bred by me but I buy the occasional one in. One last year, although purchased, he was really a rescue case. Too much has happened since this thread started (about 4 years ago) to fill you in on every thing but it's just the highs and lows of owning and living with these wonderful beasties. :)
    For regular followers, both Twiglet and her daughter Lotte have started to strip their velvet today, so that's now the first 4 girls "ready" for the rut. :)
    Sorry Karen, sorry ~Grove~. I usually start a link at the beginning, would have made more sense to start at the last video(page 234).
    They were speculating on up-coming breeding animals and I voted for reindeer. T'is the Season!! :)
    Thanks for the catch-up, it is the perfect way, I now know where and how they came about. I can fill the rest in by reading.
    Frodo has come a very long way. He is very lucky to have you. I think it's wonderful. I do love the pictures. It's awesome, I now know someone who has Reindeer for pets and can learn all about them by reading your story. Thanks
    I see there is redness... is that blood? Do you help with this by rubbing or pulling the velvet? Would they feel pain from that? or should you just let it fall off on its own?
    It's all good joan ... you have lead me to a wonderful place :)
    I'll vote that with you. T'is the Season indeed.
    Yes it is blood but at this time of year it doesn't hurt them. They grow a new set of antlers every year (in about 10 weeks) and while growing, they are covered in "velvet" which has a vast blood supply, are very sensitive and fragile. Late July they have finished growing and start to harden from bone marrow to bone. Once hardened they strip their own velvet to expose their finished antlers and it doesn't hurt. Breaks earlier in the year are painful but not once hardened as nerves have also died off. I leave them to strip their own, it's a natural process (with the exception of Boris, he sometimes needs help as he is a castrate, so his hormones aren't telling him what to do and he's lazy but not for a few months as castrates antlers take longer to harden). Hope this helps.
    Today's update. Gandalf has changed his attentions from Mischa to Elsa. I'm guessing they are/have been in season - at which time he won't let them come in for their feed, let them get to water troughs or approach the fence line, he just body blocks their every move. He's going to run off loads of weight I think. Frodo is getting quite vocal but as yet not attacking the fence when I approach.. And baby Herman is on the naughty step as he too feels the need to be a little rutty - not with me but he mounted baby Fergie - it was quite funny, as she galloped off with his front legs clamped round her, his little back legs were paddled so fast to keep up! :)
    Pics the babies enjoying a goat willow harvest Bruno (green), Fergie (pink), Herman (red).
    we have laughed, cried, and have been in amazement of the things that happen here on her reindeer farm somewhere in the UK!
    Sanddollar thank you so much for your comments... It makes posting so worthwhile. xx
    Mischa (in Gandalf's rutting paddock) has had h*ll for days as he has body blocked her from feed,water trough and fence line. Thankfully he has now turned his attention to Elsa but I couldn't take pictures as he kept her 300m away! Whether Mischa is in calf now, only time will tell but she has had enough of him... If he carries on like this he is going to loose far more weight than Frodo... Gandalf, since in rut has stopped eating and just stressing!
    Mischa, saying enough is enough!
    Oh poor Mischa, but I guess it is all part of "Natures way"! Unless Elsa changes during this time of year Gandalf will have met his match...well maybe!:oops:
    What a way to go on a diet!:wuerg:xDxD LOL....I will choose less calories and exercise any day than to be a reindeer during the rut!:p
    Hey in a rutting paddock, loads less calories (if you are female) as bull won't let you get close to feed when you are in season and loads of exercise as he is chasing you all day long for 48 hours... but then he ignores you and moves on to next girl...
    Each female gets about 48 hours of serious "gym" routine but the "serious" boys keep on repeat for each girl so don't eat for weeks... just keep rounding up girls....
    Let's hope they have a six pack before I saw off those antlers! ;)
    Baby Herman is practicing, and Frodo would rather sweet-talk the ladies, or maybe he is playing hard to get!??!!. :music:
    Thanks, Karen for sharing. My g-doe and I was talking about pets and when I told her I know someone who had a Reindeer farm she couldn't wait to see. Now she wants one too. xD
    Big baby Herman had/has me worried today. He seemed a bit "off colour" this morning, wasn't interested in breakfast but nothing obvious. I caught him up and took his temperature, it was high but some of this could be caused by stress as he knew I had something planned and he made catching up difficult.
    I gave him a shot of Betamox (wide spectrum antibiotic) and kept him penned up (with Boris for company). Checked him every hour while considering the vet but with no obvious symptoms vet would do no more than antibiotics for raised temperature.. He has much improved during the day and eating as normal now... I have let him roam free again as he seems almost back to normal... Pretty sure antibiotics wouldn't work that quickly though. These beasties never fail to worry me!
    Just a cute picture of baby Bruno as no new ones today. :)
    Love the picture of baby Bruno, he does look so cute. I hope that Herman will soon get back to normal. Could it be something to do with what he got up to the other day, thinking he was one of the "big boys" chasing Fergie;)
    Pleased to report that the Monster (Herman) is in "rude" health once again.. :)
    Just adding a photo of my very pretty girl Lexi. She is only 2 1/2 but has extremely impressive antlers for a girl of her age - she hasn't stripped yet but showing signs today. She is in the "spotty nosed" rutting paddock... I am expecting a pretty impressive baby to Gandalf. :) Can't wait....
    All girls now with the bulls, so that's up to 9 babies... fingers crossed
    She is indeed a very pretty girl. I will be keeping my fingers crossed as well that there is the patter of a lot of tiny hooves next year.
