Well done all, I can't believe how well you know my herd (I must ramble on so much). Yes the other castrate is Bruno.

The girls are now starting to strip their velvet.
Ria in Frodo's rutting paddock and Ivy in the baby paddock.
Elsa has completely stripped today and Mischa partially, (both in with Gandalf) but how they have had chance, I do not know, as he is keeping these two on the move all day and ignoring his other girls. My guess is that they will be first to calf next year. [IMG];)

Since creating this post, Katya is also kept at far end of paddock by Gandalf. When they break free from him they are so thirsty and hungry but at least now he is keeping three of his 5 girls segregated they can split up and run for feed and water.... Rutting boys are a pain. :)

I am sure we all love you "rambling" on about your beautiful herd, please don't stop :) I hope Gandalf realises that his girls do need to be able to eat and drink occasionally.

In every picture you will notice Gandalf's antlers' "suggesting" what his girls should do!
Goodness if he was human I'd be taking all his girls to a refuge - nature can be so harsh.

Frodo, for now, is laying gently beside his favourite girl (Twiglet) and ignoring his others, but hard to take good photos as usually laying in the shade at far end of their paddock. He and his girls are eating all their pelleted rations :) Feed in Gandalf's paddock is mainly wasted :(

Nature indeed has a harsh way of insuring continuation of the species!o_O Looking forward to end of rut and happy expectations!

Sounds as though Frodo is continuing to be the perfect gentleman, unlike someone else;)

Mir. Gandalf has Mischa, Katya, Elsa, Lexi and Ivy. Frodo has Twiglet, Tigga, Ria and Eli.

An educational video - if I can find how to attach!
Here you will see a female reindeer (Twiglet) stripping her velvet and later eating it and Frodo a bull sampling her urine and "tasting" the scent. This is all normal behaviour during the Rutting season.
Frodo is, thankfully, a very calm bull and rarely attacks fence line but I do notice on the days his girls are in oestrus my wheel barrow, on the other side of the fence, becomes a potential threat and the fence does suffer! [IMG]

As to this year's babies - the ones at either end of spectrum.. Pascha was an absolute sweetheart and joined me (usually pushing between my legs) as I mixed their feed but she joined her new herd on Thursday, Lily is a cutie too, she is booked elsewhere but hoping to keep her until after Christmas but we'll see if new agrees. Casper "middle of the road" he joined his new herd on Wednesday - more on that later as it was stressful BUT funny. Another of note is Swift, who is struggling with her antlers - she has little bee stings only - bless her.
On the Demon side is the beautiful Fleur (who I am keeping), whenever babies have needed to be caught up for injections vitamin drenches etc most aren't happy but Fleur intentionally kicks me with a fabulous aim... she takes after her Grandmother and not her mother. ;)
Mir asked a few days ago which girls are in with which boys.. Since my answer Katya has been changed as she kept leaping through a hedge to escape Gandalf, so she is now in with Frodo - I will have to keep a close eye on calving date to see who the Daddy is!

As to Casper moving to his new home on Wednesday. He joined a herd of brown castrates (he's white). He ran to them to see if any where "his" herd and they freaked - all big boys. One jumped a fence to escape the scary little white thing, landed in a tree dangling over a brook by his antlers.. Fire Brigade called but luckily before they arrived he found purchase on the stream bank with his rear hooves and got himself free. They have all calmed now BUT I always worry about my babies being bullied never thought the existing herd would be at risk! :)

I bet the new herd that Casper has joined were scared to death of the "strange little white thing" Glad to hear that all is calm now and I hope that they accept the little fellow and they live happy and contented lives together. I also hope that Pascha lives a very happy and healthy life with her new family.

    8) o_Oo_OxDxD:inlove: Oh Karen!! Laughing/crying so hard at the vision you painted of poor Casper!! The thought of that whole herd going every which way - including up a tree(!!!) all because of one sweet little 'newbie' is just too much!!xDxDxD:DxD
I hope they will come to their senses soon and accept him into the herd as one of them.
Who knows - with that kind of a reaction, he may become KING of the herd!!xD

    Thank you for sharing that!!:inlove:
