After my post in the suggestion box, decided perhaps it was time to give the system another chance.
Now have 2 new active chicks, one who has already sent a git (although my log says %gift so no idea what I got :D)

Well, I have been patiently waiting to be assigned as a mentor since the feature went live - guess at level 94, lots of friends and regular playing I just don't have the experience to guide any chicks!:p

Well I had 4 chicks, but as one seems to be stuck on L2, (so hasn't even finished the tutorial) that one has been booted already. Herein lies part of the flaw with the system.
No reply to my welcome message yet from the other 3

after 3 days, 2 of my 5 chicks still on level 2 (not even finished the intro tutorial) so booted
of the other 3, none leveled in 3 days - still L5, L6 & L10 and no reply to messages
3 far - 3 chicks booted, another 3 may get booted tomorrow. let's see if we can improve the situation

Edit: new chick arrived (with very similar name to one just booted) L3, let's see how long this one lasts

I had to wait til I was level 24 to get a mentor and yet I see people still waiting to be mentors, proving that the system is well and truly broken.:(

3 more inactive chciks booted, 1 levelled from 10-11, still not replied to a message. Another chick still L4 thermo dropping.
New chick l3, see how long this one lasts.

The problem with the system is too many players how start a farm and quit before completing the tutorial get added to the mentoring, so have already quit by the time they get a mentor. I have previously been assigned chicks how are already flashing red. and ones that have been booted reappear again a few days later

Edit: another chick arrived, L6. Obviously there are no shortage of chicks as I don't have to wait long for them.

    watch this space!

Jools - I can relate! It's frustrating when you put so much time & effort....and then a chick just drops off. I have 5 at the moment...after deleting 2 with blinking red(this is how I received them).
I am surprised how little any of my chicks want to ask questions...and yes most of them have no idea about the forum!!! I feel, the forum and game faq's are an integral part of the game. Without knowledge of it's existence can diminish the game a great deal!

Another chick booted and instantly replaced, with a new L4 one. 2 of my five chicks obviously do play, as the level and send gifts (only one sends love points) but still no reply to my daily gist and advice messages :(

I have no idea how the "booting" and replacing works but if you have chicks that are playing, I'd wait to boot them until at least level 17 or no activity for several days. If they make it to 17, they are more likely to continue up to leaving the nest at level 40.

I now have a chick that has reached level 20... and now meter is dropping....I'm hoping that RL has been busy and that this one will return!
I no longer mind not having talkative chicks....b/c when you reach 5, it's an awful lot to keep up with. However, I do keep in touch with some past chicks....by their questions....I can tell level 40 is definitely too early to kick them out of the nest!

If BP were to re-vamp the Roost, they should have an option from both chick & mentor to remain until level 50.

One of my best chicks (who is still playing BTW) didn't answer me for a few days because she didn't know the owl delivered mail. Don't give up too soon. I haven't been officially mentoring for a while because of a crazy real life. I didn't want to be neglecting them. Things have been settling down some so I'll be starting up again soon.

I had a lovely mentor, and I hope I made her proud ;) Though I've only been farming 12 days it feels as if alot longer. I reached level 40 and Im told I can now be a mentor, but Im still waiting for another to pick me up and guide me 40 more levels! (any such mentors?)

Level 40 in 12 days? (facepalm) Congrats farmerlily!:D

Now I know why I'm the slowest of all members, I had a bad start.
Started farming on October 2 2014 and left the chickadee roost on 3 December 2014. (took 62 days to reach level 40)

To mentor: I'm sorry for taking such a long time... Please forgive me. I don't know why you didn't let me leave the roost.

After reading this back, lol, it does sound crazy, doesn't it? But neighbors were sending cac, and I had won 200% harvest ep two days and had 400 ep stable pens I purchased, so it did add up quick. Still, for just a moment there I felt like my mentor may have been doing a Happy Dance :D
penguilnz, maybe your mentor just couldnt stand the thought of losing her babies:cry:

A chick that hasn't made Level 4 hasn't even completed the tutorial so obviously quit before completing it. Anyone that is still at L4 after a few days also isn't playing, you should be able to get to L10 within a couple of hours of playing. No point keeping a chick that isn't playing, so they get booted and replaced if they haven't levelled in a couple of days.
I only have 2 chick that have levelled at all, and both of them very slowly and not answering messages - so what is the point of trying to mentor them?
If they don't start playing a bit quicker or answering messages I can't see them lasting longer either. There is no point trying to mentor someone who doesn't communicate, especially when you hear of people who have been waiting a long time for a mentor. Surely it's better to boot those who aren't interested and hope you get one who does want to learn?

Congratulations and see it isn't that hard to level up quickly.
It does seem odd that you can be a mentor yourself after playing for such a short time however
