Many horse owners like baby rash cream (it has zinc oxide in it). Don't know what he would think of it.

Lotte's mother Twiglet has badly broken a growing antler today. They are very fragile at this time of year and they usually take great care not to knock them - I don't know how it happened but she wasn't eating or feeding her baby. The dangling/broken piece has now been removed and she sports 2 cable ties instead, to stem the bleeding. She is much happier now.

In the meantime Katya helped feed Lotte, bless her. If I can post 2 photo's on post I will add the photo of Katya feeding both calves. Unfortunately this will not help with Katya's weight gain progress!

Yes, while still growing, the velvet provides blood flow. It wouldn't be such an issue once the velvet fell off. In Yellowstone National Park, rangers removed grown antlers from a Bull Elk that was so aggressive, he was attacking visitor's cars! (During the rut, of course.) :)

She is a good and gentle momma to let a "sister's" baby nurse! There is a product for horses to supplement while lactating. Do you have anything similar for reindeer?

Poor Twiglet! I hope she can recover soon, she's just not having the best of luck lately. That is so sweet of Katya to be the nursemaid in Twiglet's time of need. She needed help with evening out where Hector feeds, right? Maybe little Lotte will do the trick!!

Cali, I am supplementing mother's and their calves with lamb creep, Molichaff condition and Alpha A (last two horse conditioners, first a calcium rich lamb feed). :)

Getting a little confused with how to reply or maybe questioners are confused with who is who.

Twiglet is Lotte's mother - Twiglet has been very well until her accident today but her calf Lotte was born a premmie, still small for her age BUT doing wonderfully and Twiglet has been a star of a mother to pull Lotte through despite Lotte having lung infection in her first week of life (expected from a premmie).Tonight's update - Twiglet is happy again and feeding her baby.. :)
It was Katya - Hector's mother who was a worry as she was not only getting daily close to mastitis, as her "bag" was filling beyond and getting so painful that she wouldn't let Hector feed, which caused her to loose weight off her back beyond - Hector is also very rough while feeding (which doesn't help).. Katya has just started to put a little weight on but I still have to hold her to let the Reprobate (Hector) feed.. She also fed Lotte today, while Twiglet was unwell... BUT hopefully not for long as Katya needs to put weight on... Hopefully that has explained if I have confused more.. sorry!!
Just all hope for cold weather here in the UK for a few more days please - maggots on a wound so close to head will be an issue... :( We'll cope but hope haven't got to!!
So when you look outside and moan that the weather is awful --- I may be celebrating!! :)

Wishing you some nice cold(but not too cold!) wintery weather to keep those pesky flies at bay, or any other unwanted critters, while your sweet brood gets healthy dear!;) Your little family is gor-geous!

If I milk some off her, (which I have a very small amount when she was very engorged), she will produce even more. Nature tends to replace with more as thinking the baby needs extra milk if it is all drained. I am not worried about her occasionally feeding Lotte as well (in times of need) but I would prefer her to produce less milk as she is draining her own body condition and with reindeer, you can only put weight on them in the summer months. They are strange in that respect as it doesn't matter how much they consume over winter, they do not convert it to body fat... :(
Twiglet is by far the heavier female and would have been better if she had the large calf but she had the tiny one - typical!!

Twiglet's antler looking good today - weather coolish so no problem with flies and she is so happy today despite being slightly lacking...

Posting a happy video of Lotte in her new head collar (made for Alpaca Cria's - no reindeer ones in the UK). Not sure the colour suits her though.. She's nibbling on birch leaves, birch and willow are their favourite. At the end of the video, you will see a "cameo" appearance from my Unicorn, Ana. :)

Sorry Sooger.Sweet - it was an incident that happened only 6 miles away from my herd and it was on local 6pm News (pre Watershed) so didn't realise it would be a problem... Will bear in mind and just post happy things..
To all who saw the post, my lot are safe and under close watch..
