    When changing lanes you sorta kinda move 1 step diagonal ? If I am on step 3, and want to switch lanes, the next step I land on is step 4 in the other lane ?

    It's easy when you see it, and so hard to read it. Trying to plot out my course.

    Yes, if you want to change lanes, use 1 biofuel to move up/down and advance 1 step. You are correct in your example of being in step 3 in one lane, using 1 biofuel to advance 1 step and change lanes to end up on step 4 in the other lane.
