    The mail message that indicates a new message has been on for a couple months. I even tried deleting every old message but the icon is still always indicating a new message.

    Excuse me please, but I had the same thing happen to me...and it turned out to be an accidentally unopened igm that had left the page before being opened.
    Perhaps you can go back, find it, and delete it. It may be a long way back, as mine was!
