okay so a few minutes ago I got some spyware or something saying I had 'r' rated stuff being downloaded and to call a number for help and if the number wasn't called the cops would be called. first time I nearly had heart failure, now it's back. I've got a notebook beside my desk and i'm ready to write down what I can so that the authorities can be called. the second time the local computer guy to fix it and I think he said to just ignore it. can anyone else offer some advice please? i'm already ready to write down the site that's bothering me and to hand it over to the cops.

also, take a screenshot and yes I would maybe telling someone. Like the phone calls, these things are not good. Take a screenshot. Do not click on it, that could start/release something bad into your computer. Do not call the number. Find a safe way to get rid/close out the page. Sometimes I would just close out the net and not close the page. Life goes on.
If indeed the cops are called on you, then so be it. You can deal with it. Have your screenshot and also the written information in your notebook; always a good idea to have written information, a digital one (like a screenshot pic) could become corrupt. You will be able to prove that if there is something bad was the result of a spyware. You definitely should be aware.
    Good luck and safe surfing

thanks, hmm, my 3ds is able to take videos/pics without internet access, that could be used as well. i'll keep surfing carefully and contact the local computer guy Monday for further help. Call me paranoid or whatever I like making plans, sometimes ten years, in advance. a friend teases me gently about it but some of my fears are quite rational but some I might need therapy for.

Make sure your virus protector is up to date. Also I would get a spyware protector as well. Since it is you surfing my best guess without seeing it is that was just a site with banners. DON'T click it/them. Backspace most times don't work so close out of your browser completely and reopen and go about your day.

Your computer person can help you. Hopefully wont be a cost issue. Being well protected while surfing is a must. As @FrootloopGrove said don't call the number ethier. More likely that is just to scare you into calling that number and give them control over your computer or get your bank info..

One more thing I like to point out is , if it is a certain site I would just stay away from it. Unless your computer is already infected with something, good sites won't do that. Well unless of course they been hacked. If you know its a good site. I would find a way to let the webmaster of that site know what is going on. Maybe stay away from it for a few weeks if you can. Then check it again.

That is as much as i know on this subject. I pray it does not affect you farming and hurt your computer as they not cheap...nor fixing some issues...lol

Oh and don't forget to add Farmerama to the to do list for 10 years xD Happy Farming ;)

uhmm er now let me think, the first time it was on a yahoo thing, the second thing I forgot and this time it just popped up. now I have had thoughts of installing an adblocker or two. if it shows up again I plan on getting all the evidence I've stated and asking the computer guy about what would would happen if the matter was ever taken to the courts. My mom, well she's my grandmother but I call her mom, doesn't want the matter brought to trial. I don't actually do banking/shopping online unless you count going onto the shopping page, and this is just a single site, and writing down your shopping list, I make beadwork and write down things I plan on purchasing in the actual store, not online.
if this is just an attempt to get on my laptop, I haven't actually clicked on anything on the site except the exit button, should I just ignore it and get on with my day and install a recommended adblocker site?

I am sorry for not saying more. Yes I would just go about your day as if nothing happened. Talk to your computer guy on Monday as you said. Maybe he can help you with installing stuff to keep you safer while on the net. It also does not matter if you do banking online. While you are protected, banking/shopping on net is ok... least i can say I am safe.. NOT 100 percent as I doubt any one is...lol But our banks helps us from most hackers.

Point I was trying to say earlier was if you had called that number.. NOT saying you would.. But we said please DO NOT CALL IT. They can then talk you into giving information that you would otherwise NOT do. Let me say what happened to me like a year or so ago. This was also before I knew it was happening to others, but at same time I KNEW BETTER but did it anyway.

A guy called me saying he was from Mircosoft company. I gave him a number to call me back. What I did NOT do and it was dumb of me NOT to check. was I did not call that number back. (Most cases junk/scammers callers will call you from a number that is no longer in service.) Any how, he called me back. Talked me into getting into my computer. Even gave me a free upgrade to a software I use to protect myself. DOES that matter? Not any more. FREE or NOT. I done let him into my computer and he planted a bug. That paid software I got for free didn't matter as I done let him into my system. And if you activated it while on phone, they can talk you into things you wouldn't know and bypass his bug to spy on you.Or otherwise get information you would not ever freely give.

@liz4t we here at Farmerama will help you best we can to keep you safe from them nasty people. But while we can do so much as certain things we can not do or say as will be against rules here. You just have to play it safe and best thing I can say is not go back to such sites. Yahoo? well I do that but not very much. I would really get a hold of your computer guy ASAP.

I think you are safe by what you have said already but you talking about blockers too.. yes you should get. Talk to your computer guy for best one or what he/she thinks is best. Or maybe asking MODS help or other players for this information as I don't know what we can do to help you more at this point.

@NoLongerServe How does your comment help us?

the advice given so far has been a lot of help and I plan on asking the computer guy for recommendations and doing as he says. I was taught in school to be leery of strange sites and play it as safe as I can online.

okay the computer guy just left and he did his stuff. apparantly the browser i was using is highly vunerable to what i went through and made an adjustment for my fire fox to play some of the games i could only play on my old browser and he told me that if it happened again and my laptop acted wonky to call him again and if nothing happened to just ignore it. thanks everyone for the help.

liz4t, I've had times where I was on a legitimate site, but clicked a link that took me elsewhere (I'm not very computer savvy, thought I was staying on the site :p ), and it loaded a page that completely locked up my browser, wouldn't let me X out, change pages, nothing. Basically a similar message, had contracted a virus and needed to call the number immediately or my computer would be damaged, claimed they were Microsoft (they weren't). I too freaked, but got on another browser and googled a description of the issue. Turned out to be a scam, the link allowed whoever to basically hold my browser and computer (couldn't shut down either) hostage unless I paid them big bucks to "clean" my computer, but got directions on how to clear it from what I found on google. You can also report this incident to the FTC. I just googled "how to report scam pop ups" and there's a bunch of information to help. An excerpt: "To check out a company, put the company’s name and the word ‘review,’ ‘complaint,’ or ‘scam’ in your search engine. And if you think you responded to a scam, please report it to the FTC (federal trade commission)." I agree with the other comments regarding calling. Never call a number on one of these pop ups. There are legitimate support numbers you can call for assistance, and I don't think you should be charged for them, so beware anything requesting money. A rule of thumb I try to follow is; if a message (computer or phone) claims to be a warning, but makes threats (like current IRS scam calls of which I've gotten 2 >:(:p), odds are it's a scam.

I also have a computer question, if anyone wants to offer an opinion. Well, an internet question actually. As I've posted in other threads, I'm having horrible connection problems. I'm looking to find an affordable internet solution other than undependable local hot spots, but live in a rural area where local internet company has monopoly and prices that match -.-. So I'm examining my options regarding satellite internet or an air card/personal hot spot. Does anyone here have satellite or air card internet? If so, can you offer opinion/advice? Again, not computer savvy, so speak very slowwwlllyyy...;):pxD

@spotsbox Not sure what I can say.But while I am not linking to outside farmerama it should all be good. So basicly you have slow connection? Meaning you get what you pay for or is it something you can do to get better speed with your company now?(sorry forgot you used hot spots) I have used virgin mobile (plug into usb port) at one time for internet. To me was cheaper then anything else and was pay as you go thing. Although I did get the month card. I got to have unlimited...lol

satellite I don't know as i been wanting to try it.They say it is super fast. But at same time. Cloudly and storms.. you lose connection. I think from where I am at and where I have been. if you can do cable with bundles, it would more likely be same price as getting a satellite. I don't know your area or the prices. But be worth looking into.

Also check your computer. If it is a old one. that can also be another issue. If it is fast or ok in your eyes at hot spots then I think your computer is ok and you don't have to worry about that.

We went from cable to att and i believe it is lower then cable speeds..Was not my doing was roommates...lol But it is ok... Cable and internet included.

err my moms nervous about making a report saying we don't have the money for a lawyer. if reported will we have to go to trial or what? my 3ds takes videos and I'm nervous about total strangers handling things with private info, again fear of hackers and viruses. There's nothing r rated recorded but I did video a friends newborn puppy and i'd rather like to keep such memories.
