New Baby reindeer to my herd

Noelle for a raging bull he can be quite a ***** cat... My rutting paddock is set up to launch feed over fence into a field shelter to keep dry.. Worked well for 4 weeks but Hector ran the fence line and was almost knee deep in mud (okay an exaggeration but he was caked in mud). So I moved him and his 2 remaining girls into Long Meadow (also further away from the girls he can't have)... Keeping feed dry and feeding safely... I had to think on the hoof!!... It's a long 6 acre paddock but luckily I can call him to gate (in his own time) tie him tightly and walk briskly to large field shelter to put feed under cover... Next year I have to put an extra fence in (hard to explain) but then I could feed safely even if I keep him entire as an older bull. After manic Christmas, if you remind me I try to do an aerial plan so that you know what I am talking about.
For today's update.. As of tomorrow we start manic season. Tomorrow we have a Xmas Fayre for a Hospice 2/12 hours drive away, so we'll be away from home for many hours and Sunday, possibly a very spoilt child's Birthday. I had been hoping to take Boris with an accompany girl but Boris is still a fright so tomorrow I take two of his girls (as too man people to explain to) Sunday maybe Boris but I will need to cut a sheet up to cover him and spray his antlers with a vet product that is silver to cover up the bloody mess he has made of his antlers...
For now, picture are the ones who are out on parade this weekend have their Xmas head collars on. Stress stress stress.. (if you look closely you can see were I have tested aluspray on Boris' anlters)

A long day Saturday (lots of travelling) but so rewarding, a Hospice Christmas Fayre. Mostly just entertaining the public but before we left we took reindeer to visit the patients that were bed bound... Most didn't know we were there (their visitors did) and a few were woken to see the reindeer looking in their bedrooms...
Hospices, you (and me) think would only be so very sad but I wept happy buckets as a daughter came running out before we left saying "thank you" it was the first time her father had smiled in weeks and he had been asleep all day... they woke him to see the reindeer wandering into his room. Happy and sad memories at hospices BUT always worthwhile..
Today we did a child's 6th Birthday... no pics, unless they share... apart from the cake.

How wonderful you and your reindeer can bring tears of joy to the people in Hospice and their families!
It brings happy tears to my eyes too! I'm sure it will be a Christmas visit remembered for a long time!
And, How cute is that cake!!!? What an adorable idea! My grandson is 6 and I can just imagine if a reindeer showed up at his house, he would not want to give it back! lol (kidding)

 

It's a wonderful thing that you do, taking your reindeer to bring some happiness to the lives of those in a hospice.

 

A lovely cake! Thanks so much for all you do to make people happier during a difficult time. Your rewards and blessings for such kindness are greater than you know. I have dealt with three hospice situations in my family, and I know how important those happy moments are. Blessings to you and your lovely reindeer!

 

Boris needed to go to Alfred's Birthday Party on Sunday as he had a special present of Kris Lillyman's book "Boris the Bold" to deliver.
Unfortunately, Boris being Boris had started to strip his antlers of velvet but casually to say the least... They looked dreadful, very red and scary antlers so we had to spray them with Aluspray (a vet product) to try to hide.... but he looked like Metal Micky...
Strange not even the adults commented but we did explain to adults and told children it was magic flying dust, even though they didn't ask!!...

I bet they were just pleased as punch to see your sweet babies right there with them.

 

I think it looked acceptable to all! Much better than bloody antlers. They do look like they are about 2/3 done though. Maybe there is hope yet?

 

Hmmn - you are right he's 2/3rd done... but the bits stripped take at least 2 weeks to loose the red blood colouring... So he should look wonderful in JANUARY!!! Got to love the boys!!! Grrhhh!!!

 

Next year should be better as you can 1) dose him earlier 2) give him a larger dose or 3) do both. Live and learn, lol!

 

I agree the silver looks quite festive!!!! So Boris will be ready in Jan. He's just like many men in my life......always late!

 

PS I had to cover him in an old sheet to spray those antlers without covering him in Aluspay... He looked pretty funny... would have made a great Halloween photo!

Well he was meant to be going to a wedding on Thursday..

Bride and Groom have visited reindeer 3 times over the last 12 months, so that they are comfortable with their "guests" for their Big Day. I have kept them informed throughout Boris' issues and suggested that I take Mischa and Katya instead... Bride has fallen head over heals in love with Boris and I think wants him there au natural... but I have just sent more photo's as I'm not sure it's a good idea!!!

At least the rest are well behaved - well mostly!

Freya is just a "devil in disguise", lol!

Let the bride make the decision. It is her day so if she wants him au naturel, take him. (But maybe take the sheet and the spray for a last minute change of heart?)

 

Hubby and I just been discussing and have decided to take an extra handler and 3 reindeer so that if she finds him too scary we can take him back to trailer - he'd be more than happy on his own with a massive bucket of feed or if she wants him then she has 3 reindeer instead of two! Best we can come up with!

 

It sounds like a great plan, you are doing the very best with what you have to deal with!
Now for little Miss Freya, just look at her big,big antlers! She does look quite proud of herself
just laying there!
