New Baby reindeer to my herd

I've got loads of ground squirrels here. Can I borrow your exterminator?

I also wish for a safe visit for Katya.

 

squirrel, good one! Is Katya going to a bull that is near your farm? Then you could go take a peek to make sure she is doing ok!

 

Sand about 2 hours away but they aren't quite like me or where my baby boys are now... It is commercial for them (where Katya is going) and they are not open to the public.. I have had to negotiate to reduce her time with them) They are charging a weekly rate.. I can cope with that but I don't want her to be away for too long but visiting rights they would not compute

 

Well sorry to hear that! I'm sure all will be well and then she can come back home and have a baby in the spring! Now who gets the baby you or them? If you are paying for the stud service then you get the baby..right?

 

MEEEEE!!! If it was them then she would not be having a baby in the Spring - risk way too high...

 

Yay! I figured as much but I had already posted! Talk about a numbty!

 

I've dropped Katya off (I will miss her). She has been put in with a 6 year old bull called Maximus AKA Mad Max.

And while I was there, I also saw Monty (last year's borrowed bull) and he has lovely antlers for a 2 1/2 year old.

and a video of my remaining herd once we returned from delivering Katya. "Rutland" permanently on the move as Hector rounds up his girls and the peace of Boris' paddock. My helpers hand feeding birch.

Wonderful pictures published today from the annual migration of the reindeer from Norway, through Sweden to Finland...
Bearing in mind, Boris, Mischa, Twiglet, Katya and Ana will have been part of this during the first year of their lives.. I find it amazing..

We are bringing Katya home tomorrrow. I don't care if she is covered.. all to do with migration routes and CWD being found in Norwegian herds... Long story... but very stressy... Busting her out, don't care if I have to take on a rutting bull, she is coming home..

 

The pictures are amazingly beautiful! It is hard to imagine keeping all those reindeer under some sort of control! I the pink clouds picture, but you just know how bitterly cold it must be there! And to think
some of your reindeer have gone on that journey! Amazing! Thanks again for sharing!

 

Beautiful pictures of the migrating reindeer. I think you are doing the right thing to bring Katya home again if there are problems about. Her heath and welfare come first.

 

I also really enjoyed the pic's of the reindeer migration!!!! Wow! That certainly is a lot of reindeer! And it looks freezing out there! The Sami's must be tough individuals! Thanks Karen....my reindeer knowledge is ever expanding because of you!

 

She's home... so happy.
It was to do with a health issue elsewhere.. CWD (TSE), so far not seen in UK, advisory import bans from Europe, but some people are ignoring advice.
Very complicated and don't want to expand... All blown up in the last few days.. but I needed her home to "ring fence" my babies. Once it gets here, the wild deer may spread it but for now I don't want any chance of one of my babies contracting...
She's home, for now that's all that matters.. xx
A friend did this for me but not making it public yet or I may be asked why she is home so quickly by next week I can say I just missed her!!

 

So glad you were able to get her home. Health comes first. You will just have more time to look for a bull for her for next year. BTW, I love how symmetrical her antlers are. Such a lovely reindeer!

 

BohoKaren - You made the right choice! I agree SC...health must always come 1st!

 

Katya is safe! You're the best, Karen!! Not everyone would have done what you did for the love and safety of their 'babies'! It's just another reason your reindeer love and trust you so much....You're their 'Leader' and 'Matriarch' of the herd. Many kudos!!

 

Funny thing was, they said they couldn't remove Katya from rutting paddock... as soon as she heard my vehicle she picked her head up. I went to fenceline with bucket of food, hubby had a handful of willow.. I called her, she came straight to us and she actually ignored all the treats until i had hooked a lead rope on (over fence) lead her out and into her trailer... then she started munching...and BOY was she pleased when she was home...

In the meantime Ana had a seriously bad hair day "in her nether regions".. Just couldn't straighten them out... maybe??? Hector is also very lame today.. Until tomorrow not panicking as he is chasing 24/7 and am guessing he has taken a corner too tight... If he hasn't improved by tomorrow may need to get hubby to hold him on a bull pole while I check hoof, leg and shoulder.. but that's not too easy with a rutting bull..

 

BohoKaren - I bet Katya was thrilled to see her Mum and Dad there to rescue her!!!! She must love being back at home...safe and sound. From your pic, I can't see that Ana is having a bad hair day? I would frighten all of you with my morning hair.
I'm hoping Hector is just bruised or sore from all the "frolicking". Please be.....very careful if you have to examine him.

 

Note to self... remember rutting bulls piddle on their back feet during the rut...
I am sure his lameness is a strain but as he was at fence line I picked his hoof up to check... hand soaked in reindeer piddle and I was on my way to buy groceries!!! Nothing too serious as he is sound when walking, just galloping on 3 legs.. Still in the wait and see phase..
What do I share??? Have photo's of how well Lexi is growing or a silly video of my "scary" bull Hector... but that needs uploading to youtube first so for now... Lexi foreground 4 1/2 months and Kata 4 years.

Edit.. Did the youtube bit too... Hector.. he still wants his cuddles sometimes...

 

Must have been fun going out to shop after checking his hoof!
