New Baby reindeer to my herd

Hehee wandling round a little easier today..
Couldn't do "worms eye views" but very pleased with Elsa today. She had been very "freaky" since she arrived and I can't do much about it as she is in rutting paddock (so can't enter) but she came to fence yesterday for willow and today for her pellets.
Hector has stopped shadowing her so I am hoping (30th May) unless the novelty has just worn off???
Maybe???? 6 calves next year... but ONLY maybe... 50% survival is normal reindeer average... However many are born... I'm working on 100% survival again... Ekkk we are on countdown though (224 days from covering) as sure Mischa, Twiglet, Ana and Lotte are already covered...

Great picture. Am glad to hear you are feeling a bit better. You will certainly have your hands full next year if there are 6 calves and they all survive. Will be keeping my fingers crossed for a successful time.

 

Nothing but "same old" to report at home as I only get chance to mix with the babies and Boris during the rut and no training happening with me being a little dodgy in back department but

Thor and Loki update... They have stripped out their velvet and outgrown their baby head collars. Their coats have changed so much that even I have to look closely to see who is who... The look so well

 

I love the "Scratch post" lol Thor (green collar) right?! is using to scratch the middle of his head!
And Loki is just beautiful, I love his dark head! They sure look like they are well taken care of which

Such handsome young men!!!! It's so nice that the new owners continue to send pic's. I hope your back continues to get better. Take it as easy as possible Karen. Backs take a long time to heal.

 

Back to things changing, a bit.. I am starting to sneak girls out of Hectors rutting paddock (when he isn't looking)... Lotte has today joined Boris, the baby girls and Katya

Hector has been dropping weight way too much. But he is such an easy rutting bull that I have managed to inject him with wormer, given vitamin drench and now giving twice daily veg oil - all over fence, without entering his paddock! He's a sweetie... The problem with a young bull is that the summer they put everything into growing and very little fat reserves left for the rut. I am sneaking out the girls, one by one so less calories to burn off.. maybe but he is stressing about the ones over fence as well...

 

I had thought the last pic you posted of Hector and Elsa that he was looking very thin! Poor
baby! Hopefully with rut almost over he can settle down and put some weight back on! He is a "Good Boy"!!

 

Sand, he is a little thin due to the rut.. but the funny thing with (some) reindeer, but not all, is their markings... At first glance it looks like their ribs are pronounced BUT if you look closely the stripes run past their hips, so not ribs ... my only guess is camouflage.. Had a quick look back on images but none on Facebook (FB is where I have to pick my photo's up from as I can't post on here directly from my computer) that I can see recently... but look out for the stripes running to pelvis..

 

Thanks Karen, I do remember from last year when he was a baby that he did have those markings on his fur, I don't do face book But I have been following the herd here for around 16 mo and have enjoyed it very much! I know he is just fine but a little thin due to the rut! He has been a very busy boy after all!

Elsa, my new "wildie" girl, I presume, is not longer in season as she will no longer talk to me over fence line.. I can't get close as she is in the rutting paddock. Looking forward to the time I can.

Lexi is still Very lame.. it's the hind leg that I gave her a worming injection in, but it is going on longer than I would expect if that was the cause... She has a slight split on point of "frog" on that foot too... Temperature normal, so no infection or has she just been hooning around paddock and pulled a muscle??? Still on a waiting game..
I have had a delivery of 3 Betula Pendula (Weeping Silver Birch). Knew my plans for were I wanted to plant... they arrived early... unfortunately the 3rd needs to go into rutting paddock.... Now that's going to be an extreme sport!!

 

I hope that Lexi soon improves. Maybe you could give the Silver Birch to Hector to plant for you!

 

Are your new trees "bare root"? If so, you could temporarily hold the last tree by putting it in a large plastic plant pot with some soil. If it is in a pot already or in burlap, place it where you can pile mulch around it and keep the roots moist.

So sorry to hear that Lexi hasn't lost her limp. Hopefully consulting with your vet will give you some ideas on how to find the problem.

 

Lexi came galloping to me for morning feed but limped a little at walk but she's loads better.

Hubby's going to keep "cavvy" while I put up a barrier (which tree needs ... and me too for planting), so with a little distraction of Hector I can get it done, even if I tie him up... just needs two people (one to plant tree other to make sure Hector isn't planning to get playful or fighting a lead rope). Tree potted but very small pot.

And look what I found in Long Meadow today... It is wild bred but the result of someone, in the past, dumping a tame rabbit in the countryside... This is the second white I have found but also had about 8 black ones over the summer.
Wish people would find homes for unwanted pets as these coloured ones are usually taken by foxes... See them often as babies BUT never as adults...

 

Albinism is rare in the wild. So sad.

Maybe you could post signs stating that security cameras are( a little fib) on and dropping animals is a crime and violaters will be prosecuted. This may curb your animal/bunny problem a bit.

 

What a cute little bunny! I do know they are not good in the fields where your herd is, as their rabbit holes can hurt their legs if they run over one! And it is a shame that people discard their pets like every day trash, very very sad!
