How do I aquire a hamster or any of the other little critters??? Yep, I'm a newbie...

 

You can get Hamsters from a Hamster stall, if you have one. Unfortunately, if you don't have one, you'll have to be lucky in the Gift & Trade event and have someone gift it to you, since these can't be gotten from the Mystery Stables anymore. The last Mystery Stable introduced a new stable (the Wolf den) and it was the last time Hamster stalls could be won.

Otherwise, you can buy the Hamsters in the Market (as of level 8, I think) in the city.

When you have the appropriate level you can access the market and in the market you can only buy things that are at par or under your level. Things above your level can't be obtained in the market. So, things like Carrot-Apple-Chutney can only be bought at the market when you're level 40 and above (and lucky enough that someone has spares and sells them). I think you should be able to buy animals from rare stables on the market no matter your level, as I think these are not level bound, but I could be wrong about it. You'd just have to check the market for that. I haven't done that.
BTW, if you're just starting out, I wouldn't worry, yet, about these special critters, since you don't need them.

There are many other rare stables, which you can find here. When there's a Mystery Stable event, you can be lucky and get one (or more) of these rare stables or production pens. I've won a Cat Kennel as my first Rare stable in the last mystery event.

Two stables which can be gotten monthly are the Bat Roost and the Crow Roost. You can get these from the Moonlight Mania events when you've got enough of the appropriate crops.

Each mystery stable costs 15 BB.

There are 3 special stables which can be bought from the shop using BBs but they cannot be obtained from wonder stables. They are: Butterfly House, Squirrel Hut and Kangaroo Shed. You might also win them at the farm wheel. (I won a Butterfly House at the farm wheel.)

I always like to earn BBs from the movie theater even though I do not need them now.
