Hmm. I'm looking forwards to answers from more experienced minds too. :)
My small cent is definitely unlock monkeys. Both of my farms make good money selling monkeys in the market. As for the rest, you need a few of the baha crops to make feed with, like in the case of chameleon feed. And since you need to unlock them in order, you end up needing a lot.

You need peanuts for flamingo and chilli for tiger feed.

Protea has one of the best XP per min value and it takes 10 hours so you can plant that overnight.

If you have the new penguin stable, you may want to unlock physalis. :)

Bromeliads sell very well and are good overnight in comfort fields. Grapes sell well too. Both of those are ingredients of Red Punch in the spa which is why they consistantly sell so well (it's the only good thing to make in level 1 and 2 of the spa). Most of the rare stable animals sell well but remember you can buy food for them instead of making it. If you work out which of the foods you CAN make gives you the most profit per hour, and mill that, it makes up for most or all of the extra money you pay for buying food instead of making it.
Apart from that I'd advise looking at the Farmer's Society quests and aiming for the best rewards from those. They'll give you Tropical EP and Golden Bananas to help you level up and open more stuff for more flexibility, plus sometimes rare trees and stables. That's probably the best long-term strategy even if you're mostly interested in money.

My baby farm hoards golden bananas until a new item that it need appears in an FSQ and then I unlock that one. In the mean time it grows what it has and sells it, which seems to be working well. Bananas, coconuts, vanilla, bromeliad and grapes always sell well as they form the ingredients for mango orange smoothie and red punch. But I have to say Baha is hard work! This farm got all the way to lychees before golden bananas were introduced and wouldn't have unlocked everything had it not been for the monkey queen.

Thanks Shimmer. I did this event the first time it ran (I think:) and I leveled up quickly in Baha. Hoping for the best, once I get enough time in game:)
