Why does the breeding pen stop counting down, if you log out of the game?

I ate pink jelly, put on dozens of animals to breed and used normal pheromones to reduce time. However, I decided to shorten the time with the last breeding of elephants with 4 x gold pheromones. Have to say not used them before, but been a member for many years, even before they introduced breeding, so this is a new one on me.
Time showed was a few minutes to go (can't remember exact but less than five), but a phone call interrupted my game and when I came back two hours later, it was now on 00.59.43 timer.
Can you explain this please, and why the gold pheromone either did not shorten time, or the timer is suspended whilst logged out of the game. Either way, the gold pheromones were a complete waste of resources. I've never experienced normal pheromones on breeding to increase time, usually with pink jelly and pheromones it's down to minutes for each breeding.

You use the deluxe pheromones to improve the chance of a skip and the regular pheromones will reduce the time until your breeding shed is ready. Your chances are increased but not guaranteed of a higher skip.

That is correct. Golden Deluxe Pheromones do not shorten the time, only increases the possibility of higher result from the breeding.
